The Mossovet Theater is located in the Aquarium Garden on B. Sadovaya Street. The theater was founded in 1923. Its creator was the director and writer S. Prokofiev. It was the theater of the Moscow Provincial Council of Workers' Trade Unions. From 1925 to 1940, the theater was directed by the actor and director Lyubimov-Lanskoy.

In 1940 - 1977 the theater was called the Moscow Council. It was headed by actor and director Yuri Zavadsky, a student of K. Stanislavsky and E. Vakhtangov. During these years an interesting creative team was formed in the theater. Famous and beloved artists in the country played on the stage of the Mossovet Theater: N. Mordvinov, Vera Maretskaya, Faina Ranevskaya, Rostislav Plyatt, Lyubov Orlova, Georgy Zhzhenov. In 1964, for outstanding achievements, the theater was awarded the title of academic.

A new stage in the life of the Theater. Mossovet began in 1970 with the arrival of a director with extensive experience in creative activity - Pavel Osipovich Chomsky. In 1985, Chomsky became the chief director of the theater, and then its artistic director.

The theater staff is experimenting a lot. A specially created “Theater in the foyer” was used to show experimental performances. In 1978 the Small Stage was opened for this purpose. In 1990, the theater got another stage - “Under the Roof”. It opened with P. Fomenko's performance "Caligula". Oleg Menshikov played the main role in the play.

In the repertoire of the Theater. Moscow City Council performances in various directions. These are works of classical playwrights and works of young authors. The performances are carried out by directors of various directions and creative schools: Pavel Chomsky, Andrei Konchalovsky, Viktor Shamirov, Andrei Zhitinkin, Yuri Eremin, Pavel Safonov.

Well-known and beloved by the audience artists have played in the troupe of the theater before and nowadays: Valentin Gaft, Olga Ostroumova, Sergey Yursky, Mikhail Kozakov, Alexander Filippenko, Valentina Talyzina, Margarita Terekhova, Olga Kabo, Gosha Kutsenko, Ekaterina Guseva, Gediminas Taranda and many other actors.

The theater building in the garden "Aquarium" was built in 1959 by the architect M. Zhirov. In 1975 the territory of the "Aquarium" garden was reconstructed. It has turned into a green recreation area. In 2001, the Moscow government initiated another renovation of the garden - a complex of fountains, a mysterious fairy-tale grotto and arches appeared in it, benches for relaxation were installed in the alleys of the garden.
