Description of the attraction

Schwanenstadt is an Austrian city located in the federal state of Upper Austria, part of the Voecklabruck district. The history of the area dates back to the Celts, who founded a settlement called Tergolape (“small market on the water”) on the site of modern Schwanenstadt. The first documentary mention of the city was made in 788. In the following centuries, Schwanenstadt became an economic, cultural, sports and educational center.

The city was occupied several times during the Napoleonic wars. Since 1918, Schwanenstadt became part of Upper Austria.

Currently, the city has 2 kindergartens, 1 primary school, sports and music schools. In 2006, the construction of a bypass road began, which will be connected to the A1 highway, located 8 kilometers from the city.

There are several beautiful Baroque and Renaissance mansions in the city center. Many buildings have been destroyed by fires that have repeatedly occurred in Schwanenstadt. One of the main attractions is the City Hall, its beautiful courtyard and the local history museum located within its walls. There is a 13th century well in front of the town hall.

The Roman Catholic parish church, built in the neo-Gothic style at the beginning of the 20th century, has a bell tower 78 meters high, which is visible from almost any point in the city. The spire of the church is the symbol of Schwanenstadt. The church houses a late Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary, a 15th century relief of the Sorrows of Christ and 18th century baroque statues of the apostles.
