Description of the attraction

The Church of St. Mary Magdalene is a Gothic church located near the central market square of Wroclaw. Currently, it is the cathedral of the Polish Catholic Church, which is headed by pastor Bohdan Skovronsky. It was in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene that the first evangelical services in Wroclaw were held.

The first church on this site was built at the end of the eleventh century. According to some reports, it was the Romanesque church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, built in 1232. However, during the Mongol invasion in 1241, the church was destroyed. At present, in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, you can see the preserved Romanesque portal - the surviving part of the old church. Another church, probably in the Romano-Gothic style, built between 1242-1248, burned down in a fire in 1342. After this incident, it was decided to build a new large Gothic church. In 1358, the largest bell in Silesia, almost 2 meters high, was installed in the church. The next two bells are called "Turkish", as they were installed during the invasion of the Ottoman Empire. In March 1887, during the celebration of the anniversary of Emperor Wilhelm I, the north tower of the church caught fire from fireworks. Restoration work under the leadership of Karl Ludekiy was carried out in the years 1890-1892.

In the last days of World War II, the Church of St. Mary Magdalene was damaged during the bombing, the roof and towers were destroyed, the walls were almost not damaged. The church was completely restored only in 1972.
