Description of the attraction
Near the city of Tuapse, on the lands of the village of Beskrovny on the Black Sea coast, on a rocky promontory, there is a landmark of the VIII century - the ruins of the Duzu-Kale trading post. The mound was built in the shape of a rectangle, approximately 100 x 150 m. From the ancient fortifications (stone walls and towers), there are ruins at the foundation level, the remains of a large stone structure and barely noticeable traces of a protective ditch in the north-west of the mound, which are of interest to scientists. and for tourists, travelers.
Although official excavations were not carried out, there is a version that in the XIV-XV centuries the settlement was inhabited by the ancient Adygs. Previously, these lands were inhabited by Shapsugs.
The trading post is a fortification to protect coastal trade and equipment for trade and research expeditions to explore new lands. The name of this trading post has not been precisely established. Since the ancient maps did not have great accuracy, it is not possible to determine which of the names indicated on the maps was assigned to this trading post at the mouth of the nearest river Nechepsukho. Much more reliable information about the seizure of these lands by the Ottoman Turks.
These famous conquerors in history occupied the fortress left by the Genoese and gave it their name Tuzu-Kala, which translates as "salt city". Meanwhile, it is known for sure that no one mined salt near the Nechepsukho River. So, most likely, in the fortification of Tuzu-Kala, they actively and in large volumes traded in salt brought here from other places. Gradually, the name Tuzu-kala was transformed by local residents into Duzu-kala, and then into Duzu-Kale. "Calais" is translated in many languages as "city" or "port city".
