The Blasket Islands are a small archipelago off the west coast of the island of Ireland, about 6 km from the western tip of the Dingle Peninsula (administratively part of County Kerry).
At the end of the 19th - the beginning of the 20th century, the inhabitants of the archipelago lying on the very edge of Europe, who spoke exclusively in the Irish dialect and managed to preserve their long traditions, became the object of various anthropological and linguistic studies, which later formed the basis for the works of such famous historians and linguists. like Robin Flower, George Thompson and Kenneth Jackson.
By the middle of the 20th century, the already small population of the archipelago had significantly decreased, and in November 1953 the last of their inhabitants left the islands and since then the Blasket Islands have been uninhabited, although they are still considered part of the so-called Galtakht (an area where the Irish language is preserved as the language of everyday communication among most of the population).
