The Big Apple, the Capital of the World and simply City in the slang of the locals, New York is diverse and unique at the same time. The largest city in the United States and one of the largest in the world, it combines many personality traits as a bright and interesting person. The question of how to get to New York is asked by shopaholics and theatergoers, fans of contemporary art and photographers, novice models and travelers who have traveled more than a dozen countries. Without a visit to New York, your tour of the United States will not be complete and exhaustive. Although the Americans themselves often say that this city and America have nothing in common, visiting the streets of the Big Apple will be interesting for any person.
Choosing wings
New York City is located in the southernmost "corner" of the state of the same name on the eastern Atlantic coast of the United States. It and Moscow are separated by about 7,500 kilometers, which can be overcome by sea and air. The first option is not very popular among modern tourists, but travelers buy plane tickets from the Russian capital to the capital of the world quite often:
- Direct regular flights from Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport to New York Airport. JF Kennedy commits Aeroflot. If we are not talking about the hot summer season, then a round-trip ticket can be bought for $ 380. On the way, you have to spend about 10 hours there and 9 hours in the opposite direction.
- In summer, tickets are more expensive and you will have to pay about $ 500 for the same flight.
- With connections, you can get to New York from the capital of Russia on the wings of Air France, KLM, Swiss and other Europeans. The change will take place in Paris, Amsterdam and Zurich, respectively. Travel time will be about 12 hours, excluding landing in Europe and changing aircraft.
- No one flies directly from St. Petersburg to New York, but on the wings of the same Aeroflot through Moscow you will fly for $ 400 and 11 hours in the "low" season and for $ 600 in the summer.
All international transatlantic flights usually arrive at New York JFK Airport. It is named after John F. Kennedy and is located southeast of Manhattan.
How to get from the airport to downtown New York
Arriving at the airport, going through customs and border formalities and collecting luggage, passengers turn their eyes to public transport to get to the area of interest to them. Transfers from JFK are provided by electric trains and buses.
JFK AirTrain is a seven-day transportation system that connects every airport terminal to the nearest subway station. The fare is $ 5. You will pay one more dollar for the MetroCard itself. This transport system provides the following connections:
- The branch leads to Howard Beach Station, where you can change to the Line A subway for travel to Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan.
- Another direction is Jamaica station, from where, on trains of the same New York subway, you can go to Queens and Middle Manhattan (E trains), to Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan (J and Z trains). Jamaica can be reached by rail and to Penn Station.
The total time that you will spend on the transfer from the airport to the city will be about an hour.
MTA NYC Bus buses start from a stop near Terminal 5. There are many signs on this topic in the terminal itself. The bus fare is $ 2.75 plus $ 1 per card. This is the cheapest way to get to Manhattan, but also the longest. The final stops of the routes are located in non-tourist places in Brooklyn and Queens, but on these buses you can always get to the metro stations, and there you can change to trains in the right direction.
Convenient but not the cheapest service, the New York City Airporter Bus offers travel to New York for $ 16. Buses leave every 15-30 minutes, depending on the time of day, and arrive at Grand Central. The drive to the Big Apple Train Station will take about 90 minutes.
Door-to-door service is provided by SuperShuttle blue minibuses. For $ 25 per person, they deliver passengers to a hotel of their choice in the city.
Taxis cost $ 52.5, excluding taxes and tips, but for that flat price, you get anywhere in Manhattan. The limousine will not cost much more - about $ 60 from any JFK terminal.
Useful information for tourists
- Unlike the Moscow or St. Petersburg metro, the New York subway does not work like a clock, and repairs, train cancellations and other unforeseen rush jobs are in the order of things here. Keep this in mind when planning your transfer, and always allow for travel time to spare. Especially if you are in a hurry to the airport or train.
- Often, tickets from Moscow to New York with a transfer in Canada are in a pleasant price range. Take the opportunity not only to fly cheaper, but also to go through border formalities without much hassle and queues. Everyone who flies to the States and makes docking in Canada goes through border guards and customs there. There are almost no queues at Toronto or Montreal airports, and border officers are much more loyal to foreign passengers with visas.
- If you are traveling to New York from Boston, Washington or Philadelphia, start your search for transfer options by monitoring flights. In the United States, airplanes are often the cheapest form of transport, at least compared to trains. An important point is baggage transportation. Many low-cost airlines flying within the country require additional payment for a suitcase checked in as luggage, even if the only one is with the passenger.
