The city was officially founded in 1760. The local population passes from mouth to mouth the legend that a group of hunters long pursued a young gazelle, which eventually stopped on the coast of the Persian Gulf. After wandering in the desert, the hunters were so exhausted that the clear water of the bay became their only chance to survive. The gazelle was given life in gratitude, and the place where she took them was named "Abu Dhabi", which translated from Arabic means "the father of the gazelle."
During the 18th century, the city was famous for its fort, developed fishing industry, and pearl mining.
