The history of Ufa dates back to the fifth century. Presumably, a medieval settlement was located on the territory of modern Ufa at that time. Among the largest cities of the Golden Horde, the outstanding Arab author of the fourteenth century, Ibn Khaldun, called the city of Bashkort (Bashgird). Now, conducting a comparative analysis of ancient maps and designations, historians come to the conclusion that it is on the site of the aforementioned old city that present Ufa stands.

Official city status

In the sixteenth century, the winter headquarters of the governor of the Nogai Horde, Tura Khan, was located on the territory of present-day Ufa. After part of Bashkortostan entered the Muscovy kingdom (1557), local residents turned to Ivan IV with a proposal to build a city on their lands.

In the sixteenth century (1574), a fortress was built near the Sutoloka River, that is, a fortress, and the place began to be called the Ufa district, and Ufa became its center. The Ufa prison was built under the leadership of Ivan Nagy. Sent later from the capital, Mikhail Nagoy was the first voivode of the district, he headed the Ufa clerk hut (he had two hundred archers under his command).

After the construction of the city walls, the fortress became known as the Kremlin. As an additional protection, a fence was built around it from solid logs tightly driven next to each other, and on two opposite sides of the structure, in the northern and southern parts, an oak tower was erected.

In the eighteenth century, the city was affected by the Peasant War, the uprising was suppressed. After that, Ufa merged with the Kazan province, a little later - with the Orenburg province. At the beginning of the 19th century, local authorities were engaged in urban planning. The architect V. Geste drew a plan of the expanded streets of the city. Bolshaya Kazanskaya Street was brought to the future Gostiny Dvor and Verkhne-Torgovaya Square.

The twentieth century

In July 1922, by the decision of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee, the Ufa province was abolished. In the 20-30s of the last century, the city began to develop rapidly. The gross industrial output has grown 16 times. During the Great Patriotic War, several dozen industrial enterprises were evacuated to Ufa. Several research institutes were also evacuated here.

In connection with the increase in oil production after the war, large oil refineries were built in Ufa, machine building and the chemical industry were actively developing.
