Located in the very center of Europe, Hungary is landlocked and is a typical continental state. And yet, despite the absence of the Hungarian sea, tourists go to this country and on a beach vacation, which is perfectly organized on the largest lake in the Old World, Lake Balaton.

Lake record holder

Hungarians are proud of their lake and respect it no less than other peoples - the sea. Balaton is the European record holder:

  • The area of the Balaton mirror is almost 600 sq. Km.
  • The average depth of the lake is only 3.5 meters, and the lowest point of its bottom is at a depth of 12.5 meters. For a reservoir of this size, this is a record low depth. It allows the water to warm up already in the middle of spring, which makes the swimming season very long.
  • The length of the coastline of Lake Balaton exceeds 235 km.
  • The lake stretches from southwest to northeast for almost 80 km.
  • To the question of which sea washes Hungary, local residents can quite seriously answer - Balaton.

Beach vacation

On the shores of Lake Balaton, there are many comfortable beach areas where both locals and guests of Hungary prefer to sunbathe. The water temperature in the lake reaches +26 degrees at the height of summer, and due to the high iodine content in it, a persistent effect of swimming in the sea is created, although it is fresh. The lake bottom and beaches on the southern shore are lined with fine, clean sand, while rocky shores prevail in the north. That is why the south is more suitable for families, while the opposite shore is preferred by experienced swimmers and lovers of solitude in rocky bays.

Other areas for active recreation are also developed on Lake Balaton. Tourists take excursion boat trips and participate in fishing, sailing and surfing. Tennis courts and riding schools are open here, and for young guests there are amusement parks and children's playgrounds right in the beach areas.

When asked which seas in Hungary, which experienced the healing power of local thermal springs, answer: the magical lake Heviz. Near Lake Balaton, nature has created a wonderful reservoir fed by an underground source. Its waters are rich in minerals that help to overcome dozens of various ailments of the musculoskeletal system, neurological and gynecological diseases. The water temperature in Lake Heviz, even in winter, does not drop below +26 degrees, which makes it possible to treat in its waters at any time of the year.
