Description of the attraction

Historical Museum "Jews of Elisavetgrad" - the first Jewish museum in Ukraine was created thanks to the efforts of community volunteers who collected material and documents about the history of the Jews of Kirovograd. The process of returning to the origins, awareness of the history and significance of Jews in society became just the driving force for the formation of a historical museum.

The imposing brick building of the museum was built in the Moorish style in the 53rd of the 19th century, and in 1895 it was reconstructed by the architect A. Lishnevsky. Originally the building was a synagogue exchange. After the Great Patriotic War, the synagogue was closed, the building gradually fell into decay. At present, after the restoration, the premises have been returned to the Jewish city community. In 1998, the women's hall of the synagogue was designated as a museum.

Today the museum exposition numbers over one thousand exhibits, which are dedicated to the history of the Jewish urban community of Kirovograd. The first part of the exposition tells about the period from the first Jewish settlements to the revolutionary coup of 1917. Different aspects of life are revealed in the thematic stands: "Charity", "Medicine", "Religious Life", "Cultural Life", "Jewish Education", "Industry ". A special stand displays the participation of the city's Jews in the Patriotic War. The museum exposition as a whole covers more than thirty topics. The exposition of the museum contains photographs, household items, antiques and a selection of books telling about the life of the Jewish people in Kirovograd.

The museum has been repeatedly recognized as the best among the museums of national minorities of Ukraine. The museum and its exposition are of great interest among the population of the city, Ukraine, near and far abroad.
